HOW TO KEEP CHICKEN COOL DURING HOT WEATHER

During hot weather there some few simple little things that we do inexpensively to help keep our chickens healthy, happy, and comfortable during the hot weather.. The last thing that I want is for our chickens to suffer or get ill from heat exhaustion. That’s why learning how to keep your chickens cool in summer is so important for anyone who raises backyard chickens.

We live in an area where we are not only graced with hot temperatures during the summer, but we also have a lot of humidity. It can become very uncomfortable for not only human, but also our animals as well. The heats may be unbearable to our chicken if correct measure is not taking.

THESE ARE THE TIPS FOR KEEPING CHICKENS COOL DURING HOT WEATHER

1. Provide fresh cool water and change the water frequently, especially during exceptionally hot days.

2. Give your chickens some shade to hide out and stay cool. The shade will help the chickens to stay cool.

3.Ensure that the chicken coop/housing is well ventilated especially during hot weather

4. Avoid foods like corn, scratch grains or anything that is harder to digest during the hotter days. Since these types of foods are harder to digest, it creates more body heat for the chickens.

5. Provide frozen treats, such as, frozen water melon, grapes, or blueberries. I like to freeze cucumbers in these silicone muffin cups with water for a little summer time treat. These will helps the chickens to cool their temps.

6. Other frozen food ideas: freeze fruits, veggies, and a little bit of herbs with just a little amount of water in these silicone muffin cups. Then, I’ll chop it up a little to create a simple slushy treat.

7. Create a chicken piñata by using a head of iceberg lettuce (big on water content) and hang with some twice. It creates fun entertainment for the chickens, too!

8. Fill a kiddie pool with just a couple of inches of water for chickens to cool off in. Chickens can’t swim, so only a couple of inches is needed.

Most chickens don’t like the water, but there are a few of ours that enjoy the kid pool.

Remember, to much heat can make your chickens sick and it can lead to death.

REMEDY FOR FOWL POX IN POULTRY FARMING

The disease call fowl pox is a viral disease that comes under the heading of avian pox. Other strains of avian pox include pigeon pox and canary pox. Fowl pox affects domesticated birds like chickens and turkeys. The virus is slow moving, taking up to five weeks to run its course. It is contracted through direct and indirect contact with scratches and sores on the skin, or through the mucous membrane in the mouth and eyes.

How to Detect It fowl pox

The pox usually shows up as warty bumps on the exposed skin of the chicken: wattle, comb, and sometimes the feet. This is the most common strain called dry pox. Dry pox is rarely deadly. The lesions eventually dry up and scab over, then disappear. The other type of fowl pox is wet pox. It shows up as yellowish bumps or lesions in the mouth, nasal passages and sometimes eyes. These present more possibility of death because they can sometimes get large enough to pose a threat to the bird's ability to breathe. If both types of pox are present in the same chicken, the mortality rate is higher.

What You Can Do to treat fowl pox ?

While there is no treatment or cure for fowl pox, there are some things you can do to lower the risks to your flock. Prevention is the best medicine, of course. Vaccines are inexpensive and fairly easy to administer. Remove a couple of feathers from the wing web area and press the vaccine into the skin with a specially made "stabber." Check a few days later for a scabbed over bump. This means the vaccine took. Since parasites like mosquitoes, lice and mites help spread the virus, keep standing water to a minimum and check your flock often for signs of infestation. If some of your chickens already show signs of the pox, vaccinate all that have no signs immediately to stop the spread. For birds suffering from the virus, you may want to swab the sores with iodine. According to Peter Brown at the First State Veterinary Supply site, this has been shown to help shorten the duration of the symptoms. You can also add antibiotics and vitamins to the water to keep the birds in general good health while they fight the virus.
You can also get fowl pox drug from near by veterinary store or where poultry drug are available.

WHAT TO DO ON A DAILY BASIS AS A POULTRY FARMER AND CHICKEN OWNER

As a poultry farmer, Caring for  chickens is pretty easy if you know what to do at right time. Chicken have the same needs as most any other animal. In this article we'll tell you what you should do daily to make your poultry birds healthy and strong, as well as other nuances of chicken husbandry.

WHAT TO DO DAILY TO MAKE YOUR BIRDS HEALTHY

1. Keep feeders and waterers full.
Make sure the waterer is clean. Chickens will be less inclined to drink dirty water, and a dehydrated bird can very quickly become ill or die.
Check to make sure they all look active, bright and healthy. Make an appointment with your vet if they don't.
Collect and refrigerate eggs, pointy side down for maximum freshness.
If you've opened the coop door to let your chickens out, always be sure to close and secure it at dusk (once they've all returned!) to make sure predators can't get in. (Tip: if you have a cell phone that allows you to set a recurring alarm, try that as a reminder.)
Keep in mind that you CAN leave your chickens alone for a few days provided they have enough food, water and space for the duration of your trip. The eggs they'll have laid in your absence should still be good to eat. Fresh eggs keep for several days without refrigeration. Surprised? Consider this: hens lay an average of 10-12 eggs per "clutch" (the group of eggs that a hen sits on to incubate). They lay one egg per day and at the end of a 10-12 day laying period they roll all the eggs together to incubate them. That means the egg laid on day 1 is still good enough on day 12 to become a living, breathing baby chick - so it should be good enough for you to eat too!

2. Egg Tip: Your eggs may have some slight traces of dirt or chicken feces on them. Resist the urge to scrub them clean! Outside the egg is a delicate membrane called the "bloom" that wards off bacteria and other foreign matter. Scrubbing will damage this membrane. If you're one of those Type A people that needs perfect-looking eggs, rub them with your fingers very gently under warm water. Then, wash your hands thoroughly

3. Make sure you clean the coop at when due. if your chicken lives in a dirty  environment, this can attract germs and this can cause illness to your birds. Always make your chicken house clean. The will help in preventing diseases and germs.

4. Study your birds everyday, this will help you to detect sick birds . when you discover any sick bird among your chicken, quickly take it out from the flocks and isolate such bird, so as not to infects others. Treat the sick chicken for day and monitor it health ontill such bird is fully recovered.

5. Give your Chicken right feed. Poultry feed is one of the most important aspect of poultry business, your chicken need right feed to grow fast and healthy, you must look for right composition of poultry feed ingredients, your chicken need protein, calcium, Viber, and energy to be healthy and strong. When next you are looking for chicken feeds make sure all these are present in your chicken feed.
